May 2007

Location, Dates Set for 2007 China Symposium

The 2007 ISTA-China Packaging Symposium will be held September 25 and 26 in Shanghai, China. Prospective speakers, sponsors, and exhibitors are invited to indicate interest in participation.

To be held in China’s most populous and modern city, and with an expanded two-day format, this year’s Symposium promises to be a major transport packaging educational conference for China and Asia. It will also incorporate an optional ISTA Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional (CPLP) Workshop, and additional social and networking events to be announced.

Detailed planning is underway, and further announcements will be made as arrangements are finalized. At this point, presentation titles/abstracts and indications of interest for sponsoring and exhibiting are being solicited.

Those wishing to make presentations at the Symposium are invited to submit titles/abstracts for consideration. Topics related to transport packaging, testing, measurement, global supply chain operations, case studies, etc., of significance to a primarily Chinese and Asian audience are welcome.

Symposium sponsorships are available. Sponsors will receive tangible benefits (exhibit space, registration, etc.) in addition to publicity and promotion in all pre-event materials and at the conference itself.

The Symposium will also include exhibit space and dedicated exhibit times. This is an excellent and efficient opportunity to present your organization’s goods and services to a targeted market.

Please e-mail indications of interest in speaking (including a topic/abstract), sponsoring, and/or exhibiting to ista@ista-china.org.

Transport Temperature/Humidity Clearinghouse Established
A new feature of the ISTA web site is a page with links to several temperature/humidity studies and information. If you have this type of data that you’d like to share, we’ll post it online.

Click Here to view this page. Currently the data includes:
     • Climates of the World, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Temperatures and precipitation from approximately 800 stations throughout the world.
     • Extremes of Ocean Container Temperatures and Humidities, from Dave Leinberger’s
       Dimensions.06 presentation.
     • Western Europe Temperatures and Humidities, from Paul Russell’s Dimensions.06
       presentation.
     • ISTA Temperature Report, from measurements made in late summer 2001 by Dennis Young.

The information is provided "as-is" as a service to the packaging community, and ISTA does not take responsibility for its use. But you may find it helpful relative to your own studies or research.

If you have distribution environment temperature and/or humidity data that you are willing to make available on-line, please contact Bill Kipp at ISTA.

Editorial Changes to Procedure 2C

Procedure 2C, “Performance Test for Furniture Packages”, has been recently updated to clarify some of the sequences and details. ISTA members can download the revised version at no charge.

Test Block C of the Procedure was re-written to eliminate confusion regarding package orientations during the incline-impacts. Test Blocks A, B, C, and D were edited to include qualifiers for Exception One and Exception Two testing. All of these changes are editorial, i.e. the actual tests specified by a properly-interpreted Procedure 2C remain the same.

Online, download, and current printed versions have all been updated. ISTA members can download (for free) the revised Procedure by going to the Member Login page of the ISTA website, clicking on “Procedure Search”, and entering “2C”. Those wishing to purchase the new Procedure 2C may do so through ISTA’s E-Market.

ISTA offers a free job posting service for members. Member organizations with job openings may post descriptions on the ISTA website, with links to more information and/or individuals to contact.

The service is accessible from the “Quick Clicks” box on the ISTA home page or by Clicking Here to go directly to the Industry Job Postings section.

Listings are restricted to ISTA members only, and must be less than approximately 200 words in length. Postings will be kept on the site for 30 days, and may be renewed. ISTA Test Report Processing and Notification Via E-Mail

For convenience and better service, ISTA is moving toward paperless Test Report processing and notification. E-mail is now the preferred method of communication.

The process of reviewing and generating notifications for ISTA test reports is being done electronically. Instead of mailing or faxing test reports to ISTA, we are now requesting that all labs submit them via e-mail. Once a test report is reviewed and entered into our database, we will notify the lab and the shipper member (as appropriate) of the certification. Test reports sent in for non-member shippers will continue to be entered into the database and notification will be sent to the lab.

To submit your test report by email, simply send it in .pdf format (preferred) or as a Word® document to ista@ista.org or meredith@ista.org.
