ISTA’s Pack Expo Booth to Feature Project 4AB Demo, Company Promos
The ISTA booth at Pack Expo 2006 (October 29 - November 2 in Chicago) will feature a “live” demonstration of the Project 4AB web-based Enhanced Simulation test plan generator, and a special section with promotional information from 15 member-companies.

Visit ISTA at booth C-27 in the Grand Concourse to view – and test-drive if you wish – release 1.0 of the Project 4AB application. Click Here for complete information on the Project 4AB program. We’ll have an internet connection for “live” operation and a large screen for easy viewing. If you come with a specific product, package, and distribution sequence in mind, we’ll even use the program to generate a customized test plan for you.

Booth Supporters: Our thanks to the companies who have arranged to place their promotional materials in the ISTA booth. The company logo and information will be on display, literature will be available, and the Pack Expo booth number will be listed if the company is also exhibiting at the show.

There’s Still Time to Register for the San Francisco CPLP Workshop
ISTA’s fall Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional Workshop will be held November 15 and 16 in San Francisco. There’s still time to register for this fast-track approach to certification, but you need to act NOW.

The CPLP Technician class will be held on Wednesday Nov. 15, with presentation and discussion of the material in the morning and early afternoon, followed by a break and then administration of the exam. On Thursday Nov. 16, the Technologist class will follow a similar schedule. A continental breakfast, lunch, and refreshments will be provided each day.

You can register for one or both classes by Clicking Here. If you have questions or need assistance, e-mail Meredith Dougherty or call ISTA Headquarters at 517-333-3437. Registration fees are $595 for each individual Workshop (Technician or Technologist), or $1070 for one person taking both. Study materials and exam information are sent in advance of the Workshop.

The Workshop will be held at the San Francisco Kensington Park Hotel, ideally located just steps from Union Square's shopping, restaurants, theaters, and the Powell Street cable car line. Click Here for the hotel website.

You must make your hotel reservation separately. We have arranged for a special room rate at the Kensington Park, $129 per night (single, plus tax). Call the hotel at 1-800-553-1900 and mention reservation code "ISTA" to get this rate (the rate is not available on-line). Act now, as the room block expires soon! Transportation from the San Francisco airport is by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) for about $5 each way, shuttle for about $20, or taxi for about $45.

ISTA Staff and Officers Participate in IAPRI Conference
ISTA was well represented at the recent “15th World Conference on Packaging” in Tokyo, sponsored by the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes and the Japan Packaging Institute.

This 3-day event brought together the best minds in packaging from all around the globe. It included twenty-four technical sessions on a wide variety of packaging-related subjects. Of particular interest to ISTA and its members were papers on Distribution Environment Measurement, New Testing Technologies, and Shock & Vibration.

Ed Church, ISTA’s Executive Director, Paul Singh, ISTA’s VP-Testing & Certification (representing Michigan State University), and Eric Joneson, ISTA’s Executive VP (representing Lansmont Corporation) were all on the program. A number of ISTA members also participated.

ISTA Exhibits at Tokyo Pack 2006
Tokyo Pack is a major trade show, with over 2700 booths and an attendance of nearly 200,000. ISTA had a booth in the “Associations” section, and we were pleased with the interest and response.

This was a good opportunity to not only reinforce existing relationships, but to introduce ISTA to people not yet familiar with us. We had a number of visitors from Japan, and from a variety of other Asian countries as well.

ISTA member companies Tokyo Packaging Labs and Lansmont Corporation also exhibited.

Educational Conference and CPLP Workshop in Tianjin, China
ISTA-China, the partnership of ISTA and China Packaging Research & Testing Center (CPRTC), recently held two very successful events in Tianjin. Over 70 people attended the Conference, and 29 new CPLPs were certified during the Workshop.

This was the first major undertaking by ISTA-China (see the article in the May 2006 iNews), and certainly got the new organization off to a good start. Conference speakers were Ed Church, Meredith Dougherty, and Bill Kipp of ISTA staff, Past ISTA President Bill Noonan of L.A.B. Equipment, and Li Hua and Han Xueshan of CPRTC. Excellent translators were provided, and the audience responded with many good questions and discussions.

The CPLP-Technician class, taught by Bill Kipp, was challenging because of the language difference, but translation was available as needed and all attendees worked hard and did very well.

Many major companies participated in these events including Lenovo, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive, QAI China, Sealed Air, WTC, Huawei, Johnson Electric, and IBM among others. Through these events and other efforts, the ISTA presence is being successfully established in China.

Initial Meeting Held for ISTA-Europe

The first meeting of the ISTA-Europe Advisory Council was held on September 20th at the Pira International headquarters in London, England. Ten people attended, and the Council agreed on a number of key points and action areas.

          Those in attendance were:
               • Thomas Goedecke – Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing
               • Keith Greatbatch - Gillette
               • Jo Hemsley – SCA Packaging/CPI Corrugated Technical Committee
               • Soren R. Ostergaard – Danish Technological Institute
               • Ann Stirling Roberts – Pira International
               • Thomas Trost – STFI-Packforsk
               • Javier Zabaleta – ITENE
               • Susana Aucejo Romero - ITENE
               • Greg Wood – Pira International
               • Ed Church – ISTA

Agenda items included background on prior efforts in Europe presented by Ann Stirling Roberts, the vision of ISTA Global by Ed Church, and Advisory members’ roles and responsibilities outlined by Greg Wood and Ann. All those present agreed to participate in the ISTA Europe Advisory Council.

There followed a discussion of the challenges facing ISTA-Europe and how to overcome them. It was agreed that contacts with freight forwarders, the transportation industry, testing labs, and potential members would be important; that an ISTA-Europe educational conference should be held as soon as practical; and that press releases and educational material be made available. It was decided that an initial business plan would be presented to the ISTA Board at Dimensions.07.

Membership “Heads Up”: Dues Invoices, Inputs for Resource Book

Membership dues invoices will be going out soon, and may be paid by mail, fax, or conveniently on-line. ISTA Certified labs need to check and update their listings for the 2007 Resource Book.

Membership payment is due no later than January 31, 2007, but your budget might require that you pay in 2006. Don’t risk a loss of your member benefits! The easiest method is on-line: member delegates can simply Login to the Members Only section of the ISTA website and click Pay Dues. If you mail payment, please note that our suite number changed (over 5 years ago!) to Suite 160. Some member accounting departments still have us listed at Suite 310, which now causes problems and delays.

ISTA Certified Testing Laboratories need to check and possibly update their listings for publication in the 2007 Resource Book. These inputs are needed by November 3! Once the Book goes to press, the information cannot be changed. Go to the Member Login section of the ISTA website, choose Edit User Profile and update as necessary, paying particular attention to the Laboratory Information. Then, if you’d like to enhance your listing, Click Here to order. To see a sample layout of the enhanced laboratory section, Click Here. If you have questions, please email or call Meredith Dougherty at ISTA Headquarters, (+1) 517-333-3437
