A Technician-level CPLP (Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional)
Workshop will be held October 19-20 in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in
conjunction with the opening of a new Logistics Technology Center
at the Aguascalientes campus of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

and discussion of the material in the morning and early afternoon,
followed by a break and then administration of the exam. The next
morning, Saturday the 20th, will feature a visit to a nearby laboratory
for actual test and equipment demonstrations.

Parcel
Forum Pre-Conference Workshop

Parcel
Forum 07, this year’s edition of the annual Conference and
Exposition for the Parcel Shipping Industry, will be held October
29-31, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago. ISTA and
UPS are collaborating to present a pre-conference workshop entitled
“The Next Wave of Packaging”.
The workshop will discuss how to achieve parcel package designs
which address the issues of controlling both costs and in-transit
damage. A key element is the use of laboratory tests which simulate
the unique parcel distribution environment. Designs can be evaluated
and optimized in the lab to ensure effectiveness and success.
Testing concepts and techniques will be presented, with a focus
on ISTA Procedure 3A, the protocol referenced in UPS's Tariff. Illustrative
examples, drawn from actual laboratory and shippers' experiences,
will show the do's, don'ts, and basic principles of good package
design.
The workshop will include lunch and feature a morning tour of the
UPS Chicago Area Consolidation Hub (CACH). This is a great opportunity
to see packages going through one of the industry's largest and
most advanced automating sorting facilities.
Advance registration discounts expire October 5, so Click

ISTA
Announces Sam’s Club Test Procedure Development Program

ISTA,
with the cooperation of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is entering into
an exciting program to conduct a major study of the Sam’s
Club distribution environment, leading to the development of Company
Specific laboratory tests. ISTA is offering a great opportunity
for interested parties to become a part of this important endeavor.
In order to meet the objectives of Sustainable Packaging, companies
must have a clear understanding of what hazards are present in their
distribution environments and at what levels of intensity they occur.
Having an associated laboratory performance test then allows users
to design a package that doesn’t under- or over-protect.
The program calls for ISTA to observe and measure the Sam’s
Club distribution environment, analyze the data, develop packaged-product
test procedures and provide Sam’s Club suppliers with technical
and educational support.
In anticipation of program start-up, ISTA is looking for companies
or individuals who may be interested in participation (for pay at
prevailing rates) in the field data capture and data analysis phases
of the project. Click
Here to view the complete “ISTA Request for Interested
Parties” document. Responses must be submitted no later than
October 19, 2007.
Sorry,
no direct suppliers to Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club Stores or Wal-Mart.com
may
participate in this project.

New
ISTA Phone System
ISTA has recently installed a new IP Telephony system, to make staff
easier to reach and more accessible when we’re on the road
or out of the office. This PC-based, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
system has a host of features to boost convenience and efficiency.
The main ISTA phone number has not changed, it’s still 517-333-3437.
But now staff all have individual extension numbers so that you
can dial us directly:
• Front Desk /Jamie Cripe –
ext. 210
• Ed Church – ext. 211
• Bill Kipp – ext. 212
• Kathy Joneson – ext.
214
• Lisa Bonsignore – ext.
215
• Barbara Church – ext.
216
• Meredith Dougherty –
ext. 217
The major feature is that these numbers are accessible through our
computers and the internet. So regardless of whether we’re
in East Lansing or Nether Wallop (Google it), whenever we’re
on the web we’ll also be available by phone. This should be
especially handy in overseas locations where broadband internet
can be preferable to local phone services.
The system also has other features and functions such as speed dialing,
caller ID, call history logs, voicemail, multiple assignable outgoing
voicemail greetings, conference calling, drag and drop call transfer,
viewing of system and individual user status, and much more. It
will take some time to gain familiarity will everything, so please
bear with us in this transitional period. But undoubtedly the greater
access and convenience will be an immediate advantage.
