UPS Package Design and Testing Laboratory
The UPS Package Design and Testing Laboratory, located in the Chicagoland area, is a State of the Art facility certified by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) and approved by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). Responsibilities and experiences as a Full Time Package Engineering Specialist would include but are not limited to the following:

• Independently responsible for evaluating, validating and designing custom packaging solutions for Fortune 500 Companies.

• Providing customers with technical expertise to address such concerns as in-transit damages, reduction of packaging materials, warehouse and ocean container cubic efficiencies and process improvement.

• Creating design prototypes for validation testing along with CAD schematics to convey concepts to customers.

• Interacting daily with numerous other departments within UPS along with customers and their suppliers to execute projects and maintain schedules.

• Develop relationships with industry organizations, companies and suppliers to broaden packaging acumen.

• High level of exposure to different processes and materials utilized throughout the complete supply chain in several market segments.

• Gain practical packaging experience by problem solving along side an active group of twelve other Packaging Engineers.

Qualifications
• Packaging degree required.

• Internship required.

• Excellent verbal and technical writing skills.

• Creative and innovative thinker to develop new protective packaging solutions.

• Experience with CAD, TOPS, MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint

Senior Packaging Engineer

The Senior Packaging Engineer is a leadership role responsible for proactively assuring that products meet or exceed HSN’s packaging quality standards. This individual contributes to customer satisfaction and protects HSN’s merchandise investment through vendor partner education, package testing and evaluation.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Perform package testing and evaluation utilizing ISTA, ASTM and NMFA Methodologies, and make appropriate package improvement recommendations based upon testing results.
• Take active lead in the education of HSN vendor partners and merchants regarding understanding of HSN’s packaging quality requirements and standards; educate new vendor partners regarding HSN’s QA processes and standards.
• Report package evaluation results to the vendor partner and HSN Merchandising; maintain product files; update items status in systems. Work closely with vendor partner and buyer to ensure understanding and achieve resolution of issues to disposition product status in a timely manner.
• Lead the design of in-house package testing laboratory, including equipment purchase and installation.
• Develop package testing protocols and integrate laboratory package testing processes into HSN’s overall QA process.
• Prescribe the outbound packaging recipe based upon the nature of the product, the vendor history with HSN, and method of fulfillment, etc.
• Maintain current knowledge of applicable DOT and packaging regulations.
• Ensure accurate and detailed documentation of package evaluation reports;
• Evaluate and assesses product damage and packaging issues reported via the customer feedback tools (e.g., CN's, bulletin boards, etc.).
• Work closely with HSN Fulfillment to ensure calibration of packaging quality expectations and provide direction and disposition on issues related to packaging quality/integrity.
• Provides direct supervision and leadership of QA Lab Technicians; mentors, provides technical guidance and coaching as needed to support positive growth.
• Manages workflow, balancing load and skill levels as appropriate to maximize efficiency and timeliness of department response.
• Proactively pursues, develops and implements strategies to improve operational effectiveness of the department.
• Performs other such duties as required.

Qualifications

• BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of experience and training in package design and performance testing.
• Directly related work QA/QC experience may be substituted for a portion of the education requirement.
• Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the Internet.
• Expertise in DOT and/or other shipping regulations.
• Working knowledge of manufacturing processes.
• Effective and professional communication skills. The ability to effectively utilize oral and written information, using tact and diplomacy as appropriate.
• Ability to establish priorities in order to consistently meet deadlines and achieve desired results.
• Ability to be self-directed, working independently to complete assignments within the departmental standard.
• Ability to perform detailed assignments in a professional manner, including necessary follow-through.
• Ability to analyze data and make logical and unbiased business decisions in support of the Quality Assurance objectives.
• Ability to deal effectively with buyers, vendors and others at all levels, in a high visibility area of the company.
• Ability to understand and interpret technical documentation.
• Ability to travel domestically (<5%). Potential for foreign travel.
Preferred Requirements:
• Degree in Package Engineering/Packaging Science is preferred.
• Two years of package design experience preferred.
• At least two years experience supervising technical personnel is preferred
• Related professional certification (e.g., CPP, CPLP, etc.) is preferred.

SUMMARY:
Provide engineering level technical support for the Corporate Packaging Design & Development Laboratory.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Test and evaluate medical device packaging materials, components and systems.
• Author test method procedures, engineering protocols, and data analysis reports.
• Consult with and advise division level project teams on appropriate selection of standard test methods. Where necessary, develop detailed test plans for non-standard test methods.
• Support division level packaging projects through application of laboratory testing resources.
• Perform research and development related to new packaging materials/components and transportation and handling modes.
• Create and maintain laboratory testing schedules and performance metrics.
• Coordinate the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of ISTA and ASTM package performance test methods.
• Familiar with vibration, shock and compression test theory and equipment.
• Basic understanding of good laboratory practices.
• Strong organizational skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor degree in Packaging Science/Engineering.
• Package testing experience in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
• ISTA CPLP certification is a plus.

Packaging Engineer
As part of the technical packaging team at Unisource Worldwide, Inc. the Packaging Engineer will create new and innovative packaging design concepts for a variety of clients.

Responsibilities
• Support a cross-functional team and communicate packaging needs for a new or current product
• Design, concept, and sustain die drawings for product packaging to ensure product integrity and appeal under varying shipping and display conditions

Packaging Designer
Pay range US-$64-68k
As part of the Technical Packaging team at Unisource Worldwide, Inc., the Packaging Designer will create new and innovative packaging design concepts for a variety of clients. This position is available in the Phoenix, AZ area.

Responsibilities:

• Develop new product concepts to support new product launches, line extensions, and existing products and provide expertise to line trials and validations for clients
• Use 2D and 3D software (CAD, Solidworks, Pro-E, TOPs, Max Pro, Artioscad, etc.) to design and develop new and unique packaging solutions
• Responsible for all required specifications, documentation and package testing to support product release.
• Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
• Collaborate with outside vendors including third party design firms
• Create Specification Drawings and blueprints for manufacturing

Requirements:

• BS in Engineering, Packaging Science or a similar discipline. Advanced degree is a plus.
• Minimum of 3-5 years experience in Packaging Design and Development.
• Significant hands-on experience using 2D and 3D software.
• Employee must demonstrate excellent design 3D modeling capability utilizing PRO-E and or SOLID WORKS software.
• Strong communication and technical writing skills are required
• Familiarity with rigid and/or flexible packaging, including rigid plastics, flexible films, resins, paperboard, corrugate, and/or packaging equipment is a benefit.
