A Workshop Addressing the Benefits, Theories, and Practical Aspects of Field Measurement, Data Analysis, and Creation of Simulation Tests for Use in the Distribution Laboratory Register Today to Attend ISTA's Field Data
Workshop in Dortmund, Germany The workshop will address the benefits, theories and practical aspects of field measurement, data analysis and creation of simulation tests. Utilizing guest speaker case studies, ISTA requirements and guideline presentations, and device manufacturer’s demonstrations, the attendees will gain further insight into package shock/impact, drop and vibration field data measurement parameters that would effectively enable development of tailored and advanced laboratory tests (as well as the development and enhancement of ISTA Test Procedures and contributing towards ISTA’s “Data Depot”). Click here to view the line up of some of the field's leading experts who will be presenting. REQUEST: To help us spread the word about this important educational opportunity we kindly ask you to share this information with your European Colleagues. REGISTRATION:The registration fee for this workshop is € 355 (475 USD) for ISTA members and € 395 (530 USD) for non-members and includes registration, course materials (including a memory stick with the presentations), lunch, breaks and the Fraunhofer facilities tour.

Pending Changes to Project 3J Project 3J was just released in February, but already a considerable amount of 3J testing has been accomplished. It is always anticipated that a “Project” (the initial release of a testing protocol) will be subject to more frequent revision than an established “Procedure”, but in the case of 3J this process has been accelerated due to a heightened level of interest and activity. An issue has arisen repeatedly concerning the requirements for individual items which are initially shipped floor-loaded into an ocean container or trailer. So far these have been primarily indoor and outdoor furniture items, but many other types of packaged-products fall into this category as well. Project 3J currently calls for a total of three such samples to be tested. Because of availability, tight schedules, logistics, cost, and other considerations, getting three samples has been problematic. And if the samples are large (sofas, patio tables, etc.), there have also been questions regarding the appropriateness of certain three-sample test elements as written. So Project 3J will be revised to require only one sample for testing, and some of the test element details will be changed. As usual, the replicate testing of more samples will be recommended, but now only one sample will be required. When the one sample is a unitized load however, and under certain conditions, it will still be necessary to select three individual packaged-products from that load for additional tests. The pending revisions will apply only to the “floor-loaded, individual item” category. The new Project 3J revision should be available sometime in May.

Another Outstanding Forum!
ISTA’s International Transport Packaging Forum delivered another quality program to over 200 attendees from around the world last month at the Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida. There were a total of twenty six technical presentations that covered a variety of topics such as sustainability, testing protocols, distribution measurements, package performance, and more. Attendees were able to enjoy several networking opportunities that included the Volleyball Tournament, Welcome Reception, Exhibitor Reception and Exhibitor Breakfast. There were thirty organizations that presented their products and services at the Exhibitor Reception and Breakfast. This was a great opportunity to network with fellow packaging professionals in a relaxed atmosphere. The Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional workshops were held for both Technician and Technologist levels prior to the forum. A total of 12 new certificates were awarded. Overall, this year's Forum was a great success! We will be providing a full report in the upcoming May issue of ista views. We hope to see you next year at the 2011 Transport Packaging
Forum, April 18-21, 2011 when we return to Disney’s Coronado
Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida!
ISTA Technical Council Meets in Orlando, Florida
The ISTA Technical Council met for their annual spring meeting on March 29, 2010, at the International Transport Packaging Forum in Orlando, Florida. Several issues were discussed and a follow-up meeting is being scheduled to discuss additional agenda items. A full report will be printed in the May issue of the ista views. Here’s a summary of some of the agenda items that were covered: -The Council agreed to modify the identification of mailers and envelopes in Procedure 3A, to more accurately reflect what orientations are used during testing. This editorial revision has been made. Members may login to review the current version of 3A. -The current requirement for using compression testers is being revised. The current procedures require a fixed-platen machine only, a requirement that was put into place several years ago. After discussion, the Council has agreed to change that back to allowing fixed and floating platens. A workgroup has been established to research the issue further. -Project 3B was discussed in great detail. Several workgroups will continue to meet to discuss areas that may need improvement within the project. One issue was resolved, allowing the use of a 9” missile (similar to what’s allowed in ASTM D6344) for the concentrated corner impact test. -The Council will be suggesting to the Board of Directors several areas within the testing procedures that need future attention, including a decision on non-equivalent alternatives and inconsistencies in the procedures. Further work will be done on these areas in the near future.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A SPONSOR? Check out the various opportunities or contact Lisa Bonsignore for more information. ISTA Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional (CPLP) Workshop
to be held prior to the European Packaging Symposium This unique program encourages and recognizes development and excellence in packaging laboratory professionals. Manufacturers can improve their ability to achieve effective, economical packaging when their own people receive this unique training. CPLP certification is particularly valuable for enhancing the credibility of people involved with ISTA testing and ISTA certified laboratory operations. NOTE: All CPLP materials and exams are in English. English proficiency is therefore required for successful participation in the CPLP program. Anyone can register for the program and study the materials. However, only ISTA members may take the exams and be CPLP-certified.
