ISTA members may log into the website Member Center and choose Download Test Procedures to obtain the new Project at no charge. Non-members may purchase it from the E-Market. The designation of a test protocol as a "Project" indicates an implementation phase. Not until after at least one year, and required evaluations, will a Project be adopted as an established ISTA “Procedure". Packages may be ISTA-certified using either Projects or Procedures, but obviously Projects are potentially subject to greater and more frequent technical revisions. ISTA is very interested in receiving feedback from users regarding their experience with Project 3B. In particular, we want to hear about 3B’s new aspects, test elements not present in other 3-Series tests, including tip/tipover, a new type of concentrated impact, and fork lift handling. Please contact Bill Kipp, ISTA’s Associate Executive Director-Technical with any comments, suggestions, or questions. CPLP Workshop

Test Procedure Moving into the Validation Phase The event was hosted by Pat Smorch at Georgia Pacific’s Innovations Institute in Atlanta, GA. 11 of the current 13 sponsoring companies were present. After an extensive review of how the two teams of three experts each conducted their work, three test protocol categories were announced: • Non-perishable, palletized in The three categories were reviewed which included photos to illustrate what each category looked like. The next step was a detailed presentation of each of the three protocols that are associated with a specific category. Virtual testing was conducted by taking several examples and running the proper protocol, then describing each step as if the group was actually in the lab running the test. Sponsors then suggested some of their own products to conduct a virtual test using the new protocols. The Sponsors will now go back to their companies and pick the best product, one with no damage in shipment to Sam’s Club stores and one of the worst products known for having damage levels at Sam’s. They will test each product to determine if the protocol properly predicted what is seen in the real world.
Only Sponsors will be able to use the new tests during this phase which is anticipated to last 4-6 months. ISTA hopes Sponsors will gain a competitive advantage during this time as the sponsors work to reduce the amount of packaging they use in shipments to Sam's Club stores. Sponsorships are still available by contacting Ed Church (517-333-3437). Click here for more information on the Sam's Club Test Procedure Development program and sponsorship details. CPLP Workshop

ISTA will be holding a summer CPLP workshop in Greensboro, NC on July
22-23. While the typical approach to CPLP certification is through
a self-paced study program, either on-line or with printed materials,
in-person workshops remain a preferred format for many people. The
CPLP program encourages and recognizes development and excellence
in packaging laboratory professionals. Manufacturers can improve their
ability to achieve effective, economical packaging when their own
people receive this unique training. CPLP certification is particularly
valuable for enhancing the credibility of people involved with ISTA
testing and ISTA certified laboratory operations.

A
group of Sam’s Club Test Procedure Development Sponsor representatives
met with ISTA staff on May 14th and 15th in Atlanta, GA to understand
the background of the study, to review the proposed test protocol
for the first time and to prepare to move the project into the Validation
Phase.
